ages 4-8 48 pages Random House June 1997 Paperback

You don’t have to be a kid to enjoy the Step Into Reading series Volcanoes! Mountains of Fires. Geared towards students in grades 2 – 5, with special emphasis on reading paragraphs, this exciting book introduces kids to the power and fury of Mother Nature blowing her top.

We first visit Mount St. Helens, the site of one of the biggest volcanic eruptions in recent history. Flying over the mountain, kids learn facts about the phenomenon, accompanied by color illustrations, in a way that entertains as it educates. We learn about the devastation to both nature and people volcanoes can cause, as well as how vulcanologists study the earth in an attempt to try to understand, and predict, these violent eruptions.

We visit other great volcanoes, learn about movement of the earth’s plates, how lava is released, what happens when it cools on the ground, and we even get a history lesson about volcanoes of the ancient past and how they were viewed by those who lived through them.

Volcanoes! Mountains of Fire is a great reading tool that combines exciting subject matter with carefully planned learning processes to help kids master reading and comprehension. As part of the Step Into Reading series, this book will no doubt have kids looking forward to the next adventure that exists between the covers of a book.
