“We, who are about to die, salute you.” Thus begins Versus: Warriors , a large and very visual book that is part history and part fantasy. Though the graphic illustrations and accurate descriptions are a bit on the violent side, they are no more so than the video games that the targeted audience is playing.
The idea of the book is to take historic examples of warriors (like Ninjas and Vikings) and pit them against each other in a sort of fantastic ‘playoff system’ of hand-to-hand combat. Although historians might argue about a theoretical meeting between a Spartan and a Samurai, the creators of this book go ahead and declare a victor.
This is an unfortunate flaw in what is otherwise a visually impressive collection of words and art. Instead of spawning imagination about different fighters from very different places and times, the authors choose a categorical winner and, by doing so, make a second read unnecessary.
