No one disputes the fact that almanacs contain a wealth of information, but the real challenge is transferring the facts on the page into the brains of young children. It should come as no surprise that Lynn Brunelle, a former teacher, best-selling author, and contributor to the revered board game Cranium and television show Bill Nye the Science Guy has found the perfect vehicle to do just this. In this The World Almanac for Kids Puzzler Deck , she has authored an entire deck of jumbo cards that focuses on teaching children ages 7 to 9 how to read.
Each card tests different skills or presents new facts for children to absorb. The questions and riddles cover such a wide range of topics that it is a challenge to classify the skills the deck can help your child master. Whether the child is asked to identify which words in a string of sentences should be capitalized (and to use those first letters to find a clue), to list the seven days of the week, to alphabetize a list of animals, or to provide the ordinary meaning of commonly-used slang, they will likely be eager to call out the correct answer in an attempt to score a point and win the game.
The carrying case for the deck, with its flip-top lid, is a great place to store the cards and use them again and again to reinforce the concepts presented on each card. This is a great educational activity that can easily be transported from one room to the other, or even into the car or plane for a lengthy trip. After your 7-to-9-year-old blows through the entire deck of cards, there may be a heated discussion about who scored the most points, but the fact that everyone will have learned something new makes everyone, and this new product, a winner.
