“Paul Gauguin’s Tahitian paintings whisk little art lovers away to a lush, colorful island. These unique works of art, accompanied by poetic text, will enchant children with their vivid celebration of island life.”
The back cover of On an Island with Gauguin perfectly explains this little book, another in the line of wonderful art board books by Julie Merberg and Suzanne Bober. The authors use ten of Gauguin’s paintings to put together some semblance of a story.
The words are really beside the point. The paintings are given quality reproductions on durable board books. The last page includes the title of the painting, release date and current location, such as Moscow, Dresden, St. Petersburg, Amsterdam and Minneapolis.
These particular Gauguin paintings should be attractive to children. The bright colors and simple, bold shapes certainly lend themselves to images very young children can connect with. The simple island scenes are among the least challenging pieces in Merberg and Bober’s series, but this would be a great introduction before moving on to the other books in the series.
