It is such a delight when authors are able to tweak classic stories to provide a new perspective while remaining true to the core story responsible for its elevation to that status. Paul O. Zelinsky masterfully accomplishes this lofty goal through his pop-up version of The Wheels on the Bus .
The story of this bus (and, of course, the song) are known to readers of all ages, but this edition provides endearing pop-up illustrations, a number of which are interactive. The wheels on the bus pictured at the start of this book actually do move ‘round and ‘round – and, by pulling the tab, readers can actually open the doors of the bus to reveal the passengers trying to exit.
The windows can be slid up and down, and it comes as no surprise that the windshield wipers move back and forth. The remaining passengers can also be jostled as the bus goes bumpity-bump, just as the mothers use their fingers to shush their crying children.
This edition of The Wheels on the Bus provides the comforting familiarity of the traditional story but also includes a number of charming enhancements for something new and exciting to cherish and enjoy.
