Ages 4-8 50 pages Tricycle Press September 2009 Hardcover

The authors are right. The scorpion fish would take the gold medal if there were Olympic Games for underwater camouflage. I couldn’t find them, even after reading the poem which describes their appearance and hints at where they might be located in the photograph. It wasn’t until I lifted the flap of their ocean bottom surroundings that they became visible and I learned about their true size and how they create a current with their mouth to catch prey.

The sequel to Where in the Wild?: Camouflaged Creatures Concealed…and Revealed, this new book by husband-and-wife team Schwartz and Schy features eleven hidden animals. To find them, children read a poem containing hints and facts then look at the accompanying photograph. To locate the orchid mantis, children should pay attention to the line in the poem “poised upon an orchid bloom,” and to figure out what they are looking for in a jumble of fallen leaves, children should focus on the first line of the ‘mousey’ poem: “There’s Mickey and Minnie, as cute as can be, and three in a song who simply can’t see.”

After reading the poems and opening the flaps to see if they’ve guessed the location of the camouflaged animals, children will see three to five small paragraphs of facts about the animals and one to two additional color photographs.

Where Else in the Wild? could be Mother Nature’s version of an I Spy book. There may not be as much hidden in these photographs, but there is much to appreciate in them.

David M. Schwartz is the author of several math and science books for children, including How Much is a Million? and G is for Googol. Actor and dancer Yael Schy has been writing poems and songs since she was a child. The couple live in California.

Dwight Kuhn is an award-winning photographer and former teacher whose photography can be found in over 125 children’s books. He lives in Maine.
