This board book has surprises, shapes, and simple vocabulary. Peeking through die-cut holes of various outlines are partially hidden faces. The reader is prompted to guess the identity of each animal or person with a question.
Appearing beside the question, “Who is happy?” is a green football-shaped face with two circular eyes and a curved line for a smile. When the page is turned, a frog’s face is revealed. “The frog is happy.” When the football shape is placed on the blue lefthand page, a fish is revealed. “The fish is happy.” A half-circle makes a cat and bunny, and a square turns into a koala and dog.
Some animals are easy to guess because of the shape of the face or the features (sheep and alligator), but others are challenging because the clues are not as obvious (the monkey on the cover). The title is a little misleading because only three of the faces are smiling; the others do not have a mouth. This book was a hit at our Baby Rhyme Time program and our Preschool Storytime program.
