Tales from the Crypt #9: Wickeder
by David Gerrold, Stefan Petrucha and Jim Salicrup, illustrated by Rick Parker, Stuart Sayger and Richard Hack
Ages 9-12 64 pages Papercutz September 2010 Paperback

Papercutz brings yet another unrestrained collection of parodies in Tales from the Crypt #9: Wickeder.

Stinky Dead Kid is back in a story called ‘Dead Dog Dies.’ This is about Glugg, a dead boy celebrating his death day – the first anniversary of his death – and his wish for a pet. His only live friend brings him a zombie dog, and Glugg learns the pros and cons of having a dead pet dog. Funny moments include zombie Glugg’s realization that “just because you eat brains, it doesn’t mean you have any.”

In Wickeder, we find Dorothy on trial for killing Alfalfa, the wicked witch and animal activist. We also discover that sadistic, angry Dorothy might actually be ‘wickeder’ than the wicked witch – or is she?

Included in this collection is the story of ocean life rebelling against man and the installation of an oil rig, and also a short excerpt from another Papercutz parody – Harry Potty and the Deathly Boring - in which we follow the adventures of Harry Potty, Don Measley and Whiny Stranger following headmaster Always Dumb As a Door’s murder by Frappe.

Wickeder lives up to the Papercutz reputation for dark, no-holds-barred humor and illustrations. Though it is targeted at older tweens, the ghoulish images and sometimes sick moments can definitely be not for the faint at heart (and perhaps a little too much ‘sickness’ for one sitting).
