Will You Still Love Me If...?
by Catherine Leblanc, illustrated by Eve Tharlet
Ages 3-5 32 pages minedition November 2013 Hardcover

Little Bear is wrestling with the worry that if he were to be really, really bad, his mother may not love him any more. He has accidentally torn his jacket—will his mother still love him?

As she patiently mends his torn jacket, his mother reassures him that she still loves him. But he wonders, what if he were to tear all his jackets, or break the bed by jumping on it? His mother replies that she may be angry or upset by his actions, but that wouldn’t change her love for him.

At this point, Little Bear starts to reveal his more serious concerns. Looking at her growing belly, he wonders if there would ever be someone she loved more than him. Or what if his mother died? Would she still love him then? What if he were to stop loving her, or love someone else more than he loved her? In each case, his mother calmly replies that she would continue to love him just the same, no matter what happened.

Will You Still Love Me If...? uses just the right touch to help young children explore their fears in a positive and supportive manner. I found the ending of the book to be a bit abrupt but otherwise enjoyed the free, easy, and loving exchange between parent and child.

The mother is calm and reassuring throughout, while not squelching the baby bear from freely expressing his fears and concerns. The serene and attractive illustrations by Eve Tharlet also visually reinforce the calm and caring relationship between the mother and her baby.
