I can soooo relate to Winston. He likes to eat words, you see, devouring books to get every tasty story morsel he can. Problem is, he really shouldn’t eat books when he can get just as much enjoyment from reading them. That’s the plot behind the delightful Winston the Book Wolf, a unique and imaginative story by Marni McGee that encourages kids to read and appreciate a good book. Like this one!
Winston eats every word in sight, and eventually he’s banished from the local library - until a sympathetic word lover named Rosie shows him the light. She teaches him how to read and how to enjoy words without having to digest them, and the end result is a new and improved Winston. Ian Beck’s amazing line drawings leap off the page with movement and color, and the story inspires kids to discover that video games and crappy cartoons are not the only way to discover new universes and open magical doors.
I love books that teach the love of, well, books, and Winston The Book Wolf does the trick in a most enchanting and creative way. Eat up!
