1-2-3 Dinosaurs Bite: A Prehistoric Counting Book
by American Museum of Natural History, illustrated by Steve Jenkins
Ages 3+ 18 pages Sterling October 2012 Board book

This board book is being eaten by five dinosaurs, each hungrier than the next.

The mighty microraptor takes a bite out of page one; the vicious velociraptor chews two holes in page two. By page five, the terrible tyrannosaurus has ripped five pieces off his page.

The dinosaurs are briefly described with alliteration and strong verbs. On each double-page spread, the numbers appear as digits, and the dinosaurs are labeled with a pronunciation guide. Numbers six through ten incorporate counting activities (9 dino footprints mark the path to more food). Back material shows close-ups of the dinosaurs.

The illustrations and text will help children identify each of the dinosaurs as herbivores or carnivores, and practice counting from one to ten. Steve Jenkins is the author and illustrator of Prehistoric Actual Size and Just a Second.
