3-D Atlas & World Tour
by Marie Javins
Ages 9-12 96 pages Chronicle September 2008 Hardcover

The 3-D Atlas & World Tour is packed with more than 40 political and 3-D physical maps, 30 feature articles, and more than 50 3-D photos of interesting landmarks including the Capitol building, the Taj Mahal, and the Eiffel Tower. Readers can view the topographical features of the Earth on relief maps in which mountains bulge and valleys recede when the maps are viewed through the 3-D glasses. Here one can take a trip down the Grand Canyon, visit the Machu Picchu ruins, or climb the Himalayas.

The book is arranged by continents. Each section starts with political and physical maps of the continent, followed by several pages of maps and photographs highlighting the notable natural and man-made features of the continent.

Marie Javins is a writer and world traveler who completed a tour of the world almost entirely without using planes, relying only on ships, trains, buses and other surface transportation. She brings her love for travel to this entertaining atlas, which is packed with all kinds of fun facts and interesting maps. There is no way to comprehensively cover the entire world in such a slim book, but Javins makes a credible effort here.

A particularly thoughtful touch is the inclusion of two pairs of 3-D glasses with the book, in case the first one is lost.
