Grades 1-2 32 pages Chronicle August 2007 Hardcover

Mexican art is unique and as such intriguing to the curious-minded. As with many other cultures, the Mexican art honored religious figures of the time. In Ancient Mexico, readers will find the Olmec corn goddess and jaguar imagery and Mayan lore carved in stone for us all to enjoy. The famous Mayan Jade Mask is amazing, as are their buildings and weaving talents. Ancient Mexico closes with Aztec art and delicate textiles that are intricately decorated with feathers. I had no idea the Aztec were also paper makers and even published folding books.

Ancient Mexico is part of a series of young reader’s educational books called Art Across The Ages. Developed to capture young readers' imaginations and creative spirits by showcasing art from across the planet with large glossy photographs of museum art, this series involves numerous levels ranging from Beginning (level one) to Independent (level 3) that accommodate young readers of all skill levels.

Unfortunately, Ancient Mexico is manufactured in China, which means that this book comes with a high environmental cost due to shipping. Also, I could find no information regarding the many eco-printing options available to publishers today, such as using vegetable inks, recycled content or carbon off settings.

On the plus side, a durable slipcover protects this hardcover from wear and tear. I enjoyed the opening and closing pages due to the beautiful turquoise that was chosen. Kyle Spencer did a wonderful job of designing the book so that it sparks the reader’s interest.

Author Kelly Campbell Hinshaw has worked in the field of museum education for 15 years. She currently teaches art to preschoolers in San Franscisco, California, and resides in Berkley with her husband and three sons.
