Amelia is excited to be spending her holidays at her Aunt Mary’s beach house. Her cousin Jason is there, and they have plans to swim, bodysurf, use their skimboards, and catch fish.
While on her weeklong vacation, Amelia is taught many things: how to use a metal detector, how to make mud pie and clam chowder, and how to understand the nautical rules on a boat. But after learning about a pirate that used to live in the area, Amelia comes face to face with some pirates who want to ruin the Beach Ball event all the tourists are planning to attend. She is able to thwart their plans though, and turn them into heroes when an unexpected fire breaks out during the parade.
Black-and-white gouache and pencil drawings are on almost every page of the 14 chapters in this book. Back material includes a recipe and a glossary of ten idioms spoken by Amelia in the story. A sparkly aquamarine-colored cover that’s dotted with marine life makes this an appealing looking read.
