Angus MacMouse has a passion for opera, but when he creeps onto the stage of a performance of “Carmen,” the little mouse scares the featured soprano so badly that she hits an unbelievably high note that shatters the opera house’s crystal chandelier.
The unheard-of performance not only makes Minnie McGraw’s career but it also gives Angus the opportunity to remain with the opera company, since Minnie can only duplicate her headline-making performance when Angus is present on stage.
Unfortunately, other members of the opera are jealous of Minnie’s success and the role Angus plays in enabling her to reach the record-breaking high note, so a plot is hatched to dispose of the little mouse.
How Angus foils this villainy and ultimately gets the opportunity to realize the dream of a lifetime (conducting the opera orchestra) is the subject of this humorous novel for youngsters ages seven and older. In addition to following the misadventures of Angus MacMouse, fluent readers will also learn a little about opera and the content of Georges Bizet’s classic “Carmen.”
The handful of illustrations by Guy Francis not only help the child visualize the action but also make the story even more enjoyable to read.
