ages 0-4 16 pages Chronicle Books February 2005 Board book

Bear and Ball finds British writer and illustrator Cliff Wright’s darling bear cubs in a sticky situation: Black Bear’s ball is stuck in a tree. Polar Bear joins him, and the two bears work together for a solution, making a few comical errors along the way.

This rhyming story is told through Wright’s traditional illustrations, featuring a cloudy and mountainous backdrop. The text is composed of opposites: big and small, short and tall, among others. The final two pages use repetition to reinforce the concepts.

Bear and Ball falls a little short of the appeal of its sister book Bear and Kite, with its irresistible snuggling bears, but it is fun all the same. Young kids will love the attractive bears and should identify with the bears as they fumble through their attempt to solve the problem.
