Bears on Chairs
by Shirley Parenteau, illustrated by David Walker
Ages 2-5 32 pages Candlewick February 2011 Board book

Four teddy bears find four small chairs to sit on…what could be better than this?
“Four happy bears
on four small chairs.
Not a bear
has to share.”
Oops! But here comes Big Brown Bear looking for a chair, too. Can the small bears accommodate their new friend? The bears finally work out a satisfactory solution, and - no surprise - it involves sharing.

In the final double-page spread, we see Yellow Bear, Fuzzy Bear, Floppy Bear, Calico Bear and Big Brown Bear sitting happily together on a makeshift bench made out of all the chairs placed together in a row.

Bears on Chairs is a sweet board book about sharing and friendship. The simple rhymes are adequate to the purpose of the book without being particularly outstanding. The artwork by David Walker, showing pastel-colored, huggable teddy bears against a crisp white background, is appealing.
