Peter Jennings’ The Century made the literary and journalistic world take notice with its 1998 publication. This history that listened to the voices of those who had lived through the time has been, a decade later, adapted for an audience of younger readers whose knowledge of the twentieth century is slight.
Jennings’ third volume of The Century for Young People deals with the years 1961–1999, a span of time that included the assassinations of John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King and Robert Kennedy; the election and resignation of Richard Nixon; the Vietnam conflict; and the signing of Roe vs. Wade. Although most of this volume centers on events in the United States, almost all had a wide-reaching effect to other nations.
This excellent three-volume series brings history alive for young people. If even one reader becomes interested in history, especially his or her own history, the author will have done his job.
