Told in English and Spanish, Lionni’s A Color of His Own is about a chameleon who feels lonely because he’s not like the other animals. He changes color; they don’t. He is not happy blending in with a lemon or the heather (although he looks lovely in yellow and purple). He wants to stay one color, like the pig or the elephant.
He thinks he’s solved his problem by sitting on a leaf forever, but we all know what happens to leaves as the seasons change, and what color they turn when they fall to the ground. When he finds himself down in the mud, his color matches his mood, but he finds a friend once spring arrives and the grass turns green again. The agreement the two animals make is the perfect example of what friendship and love are all about.
This board book for babies and preschoolers teaches about colors and camouflage, too.
