Ellie McDoodle: New Kid in School
by Ruth McNally Barshaw
Ages 9-12 192 pages Bloomsbury USA June 2008 Hardcover

Have you ever been a new kid in school? Have you ever had to move away from where you where born? Ellie McDoodle does, and she's afraid that she won't make any new friends. Ben-Ben and the rest of Ellie's family are excited to go - even her pet mouse Orphelia is excited. The whole family will be moving far away.

When she gets to her house, of course she has to unpack, but she also goes to the library and meets Miss Claire, the librarian. She likes Miss Claire; maybe this will be the first friend she makes in her new town. She comes home to her family ready to eat supper, but her siblings play tricks on Mom. An electric Mrs. Claus goes right into Mom's face, and she is not amused.

Ellie McDoodle: New Kid in School is an excellent book for ages 8 to 12. The text flows easily with humorous drawings of the characters. My 10-year-old daughter has read the other Ellie McDoodle book and loved it, and this one is a perfect sequel to Ellie McDoodle: Have Pen Will Travel.

This makes a great gift for any child who has to endure the "new kid in school" blues. It will make them realize that they aren't the only ones who have ever done this, and they can do it with a smile.
