Ages 5+ 61 cards Chronicle April 2007 Card deck

Tina Seelig had a simple idea that is simply terrific. She transforms the traditional look of playing cards by adding vivid photos of extreme sporting activities. The cards are arranged in groups of four, with each group featuring a different daring sport. Fascinating facts about these activities are included, adding a unique layer of excitement. The color coding in the upper left-hand corners acts as a “suit”, thereby making these cards similar to a standard deck.

The rules for several well-known games are explained, with a creative twist that links them to extreme sports. Wipe-Out Rummy is comparable to Gin Rummy, while Krazy Kites takes Crazy Eights to new heights with the kite-surfing cards. The games are arranged in three levels, ranging from the simplest concepts of counting and picture identification to games involving reading and problem solving. There is something here for every age group, including adults.

I have always appreciated the versatility and portability of cards, but this deck gets added points for creativity. Besides showcasing several interesting sports, the modification of standard card games adds an winning touch. Young folk (and us older ones, too!) will enjoy these alterations to old favorites.

The deck comes in a durable box, which probably means you can take these cards bungee jumping. A set of twelve challenge cards is included, highlighting these extreme sports and the skills required to perform them. Most interesting to this reviewer is the Extreme Ironing competition. After informally training all these years, perhaps a new venue may be opening up for me.

Be sure to get in on the “deal” for these great cards.
