Family Pack
by Sandra Markle, illustrated by Alan Marks
Ages 6-9 32 pages Charlesbridge February 2011 Hardcover

Once again, award-winning author Sandra Markle introduces children to the beauty and the instincts of wild animals as she tells the story of a gray wolf who is one of the first to be reintroduced into Yellowstone National Park.

Based on a true story, Family Pack is the story of a young female wolf which has been relocated with her mother and another male wolf. The wolf goes off into the wild and must rely on her instincts to hunt and seek shelter on her own. Eventually, she meets a male wolf, and they begin a family.

Markle narrates the wolf’s story as if she is an intimate observer capturing the sights and smells of the wilderness and the animals themselves. Alan Marks’s stunning watercolor illustrations complement the text realistically, depicting the animals in motion within their winter forest environment.

Family Pack is a positive addition to the elementary study of endangered species and the involvement of man in restoring wildlife to its natural state. A wonderful vehicle to introduce the ideas of Aldo Leopold and the natural cycle of life, it will inspire children to think of other ideas to help endangered animals and cause them to consider the role of predators in the wild. Highly recommended.
