Grades 7+ 224 pages Kingfisher October 2009 Paperback

The first two books of this series essentially introduced the main characters. The third book, Gifted: Here Today, Gone Tomorrow, sets up the plot for the rest of the series and gives the readers a few mysteries to consider.

Several of the gifted students are kidnapped. Only one of them, Carter, is returned. Since Carter doesn’t speak and is all but catatonic, apparently the kidnappers aren’t worried about what he’ll say. Jenna, the mindreader, can’t even read his mind – when she tries, it’s just blackness.

The kidnappers plan to use the gifted students to rob a bank. One of them has superhuman strength, one can disappear, one can make people do what she wants. But is that the kidnappers’ only purpose?

The kidnappers’ intentions aren’t the only thing that author Marilyn Kaye makes the reader wonder about. Is there a spy in their midst? What’s up with Carter? Why won’t Sarah use her gift? The next book in the series is due out April 2010. We’ll just have to wonder until then.
