The Great Cake Mystery: Precious Ramotswe's Very First Case (A Number 1 Ladies' Detective Agency Book for Young Readers)
by Alexander McCall Smith, illustrated by Iain McIntosh
Ages 7-10 96 pages Anchor April 2012 Paperback

Precious knows how to close a case and make a new friend even when she’s young!

Before she eventually becomes the number one ladies’ detective in Gaborone, Precious Ramotswe is known as the nicest girl in Botswana. She lives there with her father and attends school within walking distance from home.

When food goes missing from school, her classmates are quick to blame the most likely suspect. Precious, however, uses sound reasoning and thoughtfulness to discover the identity of the thief.

McCall Smith’s well-paced mystery includes chapters with cliffhanger endings and early foreshadowing. McIntosh’s full-page and spot illustrations in brown, black, gray or white help establish the mood and setting of the story.

Whether as a child or an adult, Precious proves to be a likeable character and a positive role model. The Great Cake Mystery makes an excellent choice for a classroom read-aloud or a children’s book club. Back material includes discussion questions, a glossary, a recipe, and curriculum connections.
