Author Renee Watson has written a very bold children’s picture book - bold because the point of view changes throughout the book and because it deals with the great American tragedy known as Hurricane Katrina.
A Place Where Hurricanes Happen is about four friends in a lower-class New Orleans neighborhood. Their four different families choose different ways of handling the approaching storm: some choose to leave, some choose to stay.
The storm comes, the levees break, and the disaster becomes a sad moment in our country’s history.
Watson’s tale ends on an upbeat note as the friends are all finally reunited in their old neighborhood. They all still love New Orleans, even though hurricanes sometimes happen.
The book skips over the really tragic and scary moments and does not fully capture the sense of loss that is still being felt. But that’s okay. It is, after all, a children’s book.
