Judy Moody & Stink: The Holly Joliday
by Megan McDonald, illustrated by Peter H. Reynolds
Ages 9-12 96 pages Candlewick September 2008 Paperback

Judy Moody likes to be the voice of reason when her brother, Stinky, begins thinking up wild adventures for the two of them. Now that school is almost out for the Christmas holidays, however, Judy is spending most of her time making her Christmas list. She has so many gifts to list that she is using a roll of toilet paper just to have enough room to write everything that she wants.

Stinky is not making a list. There is only one thing that Stinky wants for Christmas and he doesn’t need to write it down: Stinky wants it to snow.

Sister Judy reminds Stinky that it hardly ever snows in Virginia and that it will most likely not snow in Virginia this Christmas. Stinky’s encounter with the substitute mailman has given him other ideas. The big, roly-poly guy with the long white beard introduced himself as Jack Frost, but he bears a striking resemblance to another bearded guy who makes an appearance at Christmastime.

After a stellar appearance at the school Christmas pageant, Stinky convinces Mom and Dad to let him sit up and wait for snow. The reader will enjoy following along as Stinky and Judy find ways to make both of their wishes come true, discovering along the way that sometimes just believing in the impossible is enough.
