Igor Spot Champion
by Guido van Genechten
Ages 3-5 32 pages Clavis July 2015 Hardcover

Igor is a small ladybug. How will he compete in the Spot Olympics? He will carry the Spot Flag, and he will be the coxswain for the lightweight four rowing team.

“He sets the pace” with his “Hey…hup, hey…hup!” calls. It’s a tight race, but Igor’s team (in the red boat) is the first group to cross the finish line.

Participation is the main goal in these game. Whether it is cheering on teams by singing the Spot Song or trying out for various events like gymnastics, ping-pong, or weight-lifting, every ladybug has a part to play in this smallest of small sports competitions.

The author has written a few other books that feature ladybugs (Super Ladybug to the Rescue and Circus 123) with talent and big hearts. There is not much color in this new book, just small spots of dark or light red. The ladybugs spots look finger-painted on the wings, and the scores can be read on the scoreboards in front of each event.

The audience is depicted with loosely drawn circles, but the one person in the audience that does stand out is little Igor, who's busy practicing his “Hup hey” as he cheers on his fellow athletes.
