Dolphin's Discovery (Jumbo Jigsaw Storybooks)
by Mark Shulman
Ages 3+ 12 pages Imagine!/Charlesbridge November 2009 Board book

This special activity book not only contains a clever story that underscores the importance of working together to accomplish a task; it also offers six jigsaw puzzles featuring the main characters. The puzzle pieces are large enough that little fingers should be able to handle them with ease.

The story itself follows the adventure of a dolphin who discovers an abandoned pirate ship but needs five of his friends to help him access the vessel’s treasure chest. Each of the dolphin’s buddies has a specific role to play based on his or her physical characteristics. For example, the electric eel lights up the underwater wreck site so that everyone can see, while the walrus uses his large tusks to pry the top off the chest.

Once it has been opened, the dolphin shares the chest’s contents with his friends Although they all thank him, the dolphin ends the story with these wise words: “But the real treasure is all my friends.”

You’ll also find a series of questions about the story. “What two letters are written on the treasure chest?” “What are Whale’s two colors?” and “How many arms does Octopus have?” are just some of these queries. Flip up the flap and you’ll discover the correct answer.

It isn’t that often that one picture book functions on so many levels. This is an excellent participation book but it does pose a choking hazard for very young children. I would not let a child who still puts things in his or her mouth use this book until the habit has been outgrown.
