A highly visual, “how-to” art series, Kids Made Modern features real children wearing, using and making crafts using collage, dyes, fabric paint and embroidery. The books begin right inside the front cover with a definition of the art technique and how it is used around the world. Every book features 9 or 10 unique, contemporary art projects using each medium.
Each project begins with a picture of the completed work. Smaller photos depict the supply list and steps to completing each project with concise, specific text further explaining each part of the project—including when to call on an adult to help (e.g. ironing).
The projects are unique, and most are pretty straightforward—collage cubes and guitar, three-sweater mash-up (embroidery), ice (dyed) sheets, sweater press fabric painting, etc. The layout of each book is similar yet varied with bright colors and up-close photographs. The children featured in the book are real kids with clever expressions, messy hair and personality.
Most projects can be completed entirely by children with adult supervision. Some of the embroidery stitches are easier said than done and will require practice to perfect. Overall, this series will inspire children and their parents and teachers to try a new art project using a variety of techniques. Highly recommended.
