Matisse: Dance for Joy
by Susan Goldman Rubin
PreK-2nd grades 26 pages Chronicle Books April 2008 Board book

When little ones show an initial interest in books, the types selected have the potential to influence their likes and dislikes. At the very least, first books introduce children to ideas - and, in this case, art - to which they might not otherwise be exposed. In Matisse: Dance for Joy, the author does a wonderful of job of providing a sampling of the art of Mattise in the form of a board book. In it, she presents a few classic pieces of his art with some text about basic movements (such as stretching and dancing) which offer a glimpse into the world of art that will hopefully follow.

Matisse: Dance for Joy is a great way to encourage a young child’s love for books, for art, and in the best case scenario, for both.
