*A Brand-New Day with Mouse and Mole (A Mouse and Mole Story)* by Wong Herbert Yee

A Brand-New Day with Mouse and Mole (A Mouse and Mole Story)
by Wong Herbert Yee
Grades 2-3 48 pages Houghton Mifflin September 2008 Hardcover

Mole rolls out of bed on a brand new day and pulls on his pants. He feels a draft, but it isn’t coming from the front door or the back door - Mole has a hole in his pants! He has a hole in his shirt, too. It appears that pesky moths have eaten holes in all of Mole’s clothes. This puts him in a very bad mood.

Luckily, his friend and upstairs neighbor, Mouse, arrives just in time to help Mole chase the moths out. After a lovely meal (lightly fried worms for Mole and three cheese nachos for Mouse), the two friends set out to buy Mole some new clothes. Mole opts for a pair of green pants and a shirt with a fish design and buttons in favor of his usual brown pants and green shirt. It is a brand new day, after all, and “What’s Old is OUT!” declares the sign in the store. But when Mouse surprises Mole by repairing his old, moth-eaten clothes with strategically placed patches, Mole finds that sometimes old will do just as nicely as new.

Wong Herbert Yee is the creator of the Fireman Small series as well as two other books in the Mouse and Mole series. A Brand-New Day with Mouse and Mole is a worthy addition to his earlier work, sharing the same easy charm as his other books. The warm camaraderie and free-flowing interactions between Mouse and Mole will appeal to young children, while the old-fashioned, slow-paced, pastoral feel to the book will appeal to the adults in their lives. The watercolor and ink artwork is absolutely gorgeous and invites close examination of the detail in each drawing.

If you’re looking for an easy-reader book reminiscent of the beloved classics The Wind in the Willows and The Tale of Peter Rabbit, look no further. A Brand-New Day with Mouse and Mole is a charmer.
