This is not your typical bedtime story. In fact, it’s Dad who doesn’t want to go to bed, no matter how many stories his son has read.
It’s Dad, who is big and strong, who wants to crawl into bed with his son, and it’s his son who understands that dad cannot get into bed with him because “putting him to bed again will be mission impossible! So he needs to fall asleep in his own room.” Even when the son has put dad to bed and reaches to turn the light off, it’s Dad who yells, “No, don’t do that! Leave the light on!”
My Dad is Big and Strong, But… is a simple and delightful story. The role reversal is amusing for both adult readers and children, who will recognize themselves in the opposite role—as the child scolding the dad for not going to bed or as the father using every excuse not to go to bed.
The illustrations are in neutral tones with bold lines and textural pencil coloring and often include crayon-drawn words and pictures to further portray the juxtaposition of roles as the smudged child’s handwriting reads: “Hang on, we’re almost there.”
An entertaining concept that is carried off exceptionally well and will lead to many repeated readings at bedtime. Highly recommended.
