It's My Birthday
by Helen Oxenbury
Ages 3+ 24 pages Candlewick June 2010 Board book

Charming illustrations, a repetitive text that allows the youngster to join the narrative and a cute story guarantee that this board book will become a favorite of beginning readers.

“It’s my birthday and I’m going to make a cake,” explains the child on the book’s first page. The challenge becomes collecting all the necessary ingredients, which the child does by asking all her animal friends. The chickens supply some eggs, a little bear some flour, and a cat the butter and milk.

Once all the ingredients are assembled, the animals help the child make her birthday cake. “Thank you, everybody,” she says. “Now all of you can help me eat the cake.”

As an extra bonus, you’ll find the recipe for the child’s birthday cake on the final page of the book. Bon appetit!
