Pete the Cat: Too Cool for School (My First I Can Read!)
by Kimberly and James Dean
Ages 4-8 32 pages HarperCollins February 2014 Paperback

Pete the Cat doesn’t know what to wear for school, but he knows that he wants to look cool. He asks his friends and family, “What should I wear?”

After each animal makes a suggestion, Pete puts that article of clothing on. But when he goes to school wearing everyone’s favorite piece of clothing, he realizes he looks silly and feels hot.

Pete goes back home and changes into a “cool” outfit; one made up of all HIS favorite clothes. As always, Pete leaves us with a great piece of advice at the end of the story, “If you want to be cool, just be you!”

The illustrations feature familiar sights. The shoes and buttons that made an appearance in Pete’s previous stories are also in this book. The new wardrobe additions are sure to please, too. Pete wears fish shorts, cowboy boots, and a “cat” shirt.

Fans of the picture books, will love to read about Pete with the I Can Read series. The simple language and repetition will help children become motivated readers.
