Pirates Don't Change Diapers will make a wonderful addition to your child’s library if for nothing else than the boisterous illustrations that leap off the pages and into your child’s imagination. The adventure begins when Jeremy Jacob is told to look after his baby sister, Bonney Anne, when his mother leaves to pick up some milk and his dad is enjoying some much-needed rest. As his mother exits, Captain Braid Beard and his cast of pirates appear at the door to enlist the help of Jeremy to retrieve the treasure buried in his backyard.
The commotion of their entry jolts Jeremy’s baby sister from her sleep, leaving the pirates with the challenge of calming her so they can focus on the retrieval of the treasure. Whether the pirates are changing her diaper (which pirates do not do), feeding her strained spinach (which ends up everywhere but in her stomach), or attempting to tire her out, each task is more heartfelt and humorous than the one that precedes it.
The pirate’s care of Baby Anne and the subsequent search for the hidden treasure make for a great adventure that children of all ages will be eager to follow. Both pirates and childcare duties provide opportunities for wonderful drawings, and illustrator David Shannon masterfully exploits the humor in each. The result is an enchanting book that is a hidden treasure all on its own.
