This entry in the Dr. Seuss legacy books takes Sally and Dick on another adventure, this time to a pond to explore a number of insects and animals that can be found there.
The presentation of this book is a bit more advanced than classic Seuss tales and provides readers with the opportunity to learn about science and nature on a number of different levels. The book does feature the familiarity of the rhyming simple text, but it also includes more advanced terms identifying the illustrations, additional educational facts (similar to sidebars you might find in more mature publications) and a glossary of key terms that bolster the educational value of the story.
After an initial reading, children will know basic facts - such as that hatched ducklings follow their mother and that amphibians live part-time in the water and part-time in the land. Upon a second, third or fourth reading, they may be able to explain the transformation of pollywogs (aka tadpoles) into frogs, or that a duck is able to drain its bill because of the grooves in it called lamellae.
Would You Rather Be a Pollywog? is a great addition to any child’s book collection and serves a dual role: as a source of entertainment through the witty rhyming text and illustrations, as well as a source of an abundance of information about science and nature.
