Pooh Adore-ables Thinkables: Pooh Shapes
by Walt Disney
Baby-Preschool 12 pages Random House/Disney January 2006 Board book

Pooh Shapes, an interactive board book with wooden play pieces, introduces shape and color concepts to toddlers. Winnie the Pooh, Piglet, Tigger and Roo (drawn in the same cutesy fashion against a bold, simplified Hundred Acre Wood as the Pooh Hummables books) look for circles, triangles and squares while they play outside.

Spinnable wooden blocks integrated into an ingeniously designed stay-open cover let toddlers point and spin to the right shape (and color) as the object that Pooh and his friends find on each page. The circle is a wagon wheel on one side, a blue ballon on the other; the triangle flips from red to orange, and a bold purple square when turned reveals a yellow sign with an arrow pointing the way to a picnic chockful of shapes of different sizes and colors.

It is obvious that a great deal of thought has gone into the design of the Pooh Thinkables books. The extra-cuddly character illustrations are impossible not to love, especially for little ones already enamored of Pooh and his pals, and joining them on a shape-hunt is irresistible fun that just happens to contribute to an important early learning milestone. Kudos to Random/Disney.
