Princess Allie, Princess Mellie and Princess Libby live in a palace by the sea where each of them has their own hobby. Allie loves to bake, Mellie gardens, and Libby likes to build things.
Each princess is especially good at what they do and is usually happy while doing it. But then, on the day before the Summer Party, Princess Mellie declares she is tired of doing the same thing every day and wants to try her hand at baking. The three princesses decide to trade jobs because “princesses are good at everything.” In preparation for tomorrow’s party, Allie must make 100 chairs, Mellie must bake 100 cupcakes and Libby must pick 100 blueberries. Needless to say, havoc ensues. Will the Summer Party be a disaster?
Princesses Are Not Perfect! is the companion to author Kate Lum’s Princesses Are Not Quitters (Bloomsbury 2003). Although the theme here comes across a bit on the didactic side with a fairly predictable ending, it will still hold appeal for your own little flawed princess. However, the gem to this book is really the wonderfully detailed watercolor artwork by veteran illustrator, Sue Hellard whose renditions of the three princesses come down on the zany side. Each time you read this story, you will notice something different. From a croissant-stealing gull to a chainsaw-wielding princess, Hellard’s images are a masterpiece all on their own.
Princesses Are Not Perfect! is a fun reminder that nobody is perfect and we all have our own talents or strong points. After all, “you don’t have to be good at everything to be a princess.”
