*The Pirate and Other Adventures of Sam and Alice* by Akemi Gutierrez
The Pirate and Other Adventures of Sam and Alice
by Akemi Gutierrez
Grades K-2 52 pages Houghton Mifflin June 2007 Hardcover

Sam and Alice are a brother and sister who take numerous adventures into many wild and uncharted unknowns. Sometimes they take along companions that prove to be valuable additions to the team, like Tula the platypus.

In one adventure, they take a rocket ship to explore galaxies and planets full of alien life. They make some friends and meet some scary, dangerous foes. Through it all, they learn, explore, and use that most valuable of educational gifts: imagination.

Another adventure leads them to imagine what could be if they had a genius crocodile as a friend. He could help them make all kinds of special gizmos and gadgets that would allow them to do all sorts of neat things.

The next adventure leads them over the salty seas in search of treasure - and into the dangerous hands of a treasure-hunting pirate. What can they do to save their necks when the pirate is forcing them to walk the plank into the big, cold drink?

The Pirate and Other Adventures of Sam and Alice is a great reminder of the power of imagination. Not only does it share Sam and Alice's adventures with young readers; it also shows them how Sam and Alice need nothing more than their imagination and things around their room to make their dream world come to life. The touch of reality in the innocent, creative fun Sam and Alice have is a perfect teaching tool to get all young readers going on their own adventures.
