Sleeping Bootsie (Step into Reading - Step 3)
by Maribeth Boelts, illustrated by Patricia Cantor
Ages 4+ 48 pages Random House June 2011 Paperback

Sleeping Bootsie is an enchanting story of a kitten who is discovered and cared for by a little girl named Meg, a young maiden working for the queen.

The king and queen host a party so that everyone can meet their cute little kitten, Bootsie. Pink, Purple and Yellow Fairies are invited to the ball, and each bestows a gift on Bootsie. However, Silver Fairy shows up angry because she was not invited. She places a curse on Bootsie that will put the kitten into a deep sleep if she ever touches her paw to water. The only way she will wake from the deep sleep is if she hears her happiest sound.

Despite all efforts of the royal court, Bootsie ends up touching water and falling into a deep sleep, where she remains until she hears her happiest sound. Children will delight in reading the story to discover what sound holds the magic to wake up Bootsie.

This is a Level 3 Step into Reading book suitable for first to third graders who can read on their own, can follow a plot and are ready for new words. However, this charming story and the illustrations for this fairytale have a muted, subdued, watercolor quality about them that will captivate children ages 4 and up. Highly recommended.
