The Smurfs #2: The Smurfs and the Magic Flute
by Yvan Delporte, illustrated by Peyo
Ages 7-12 64 pages Papercutz August 2010 Paperback

It may be considered flawed because it has six holes, but the music that comes out of the magic flute has the power to control people. The Smurfs need to get their flute back before its power is used to conquer distant lands and make villains like Matthew Oilycreep rich and powerful.

The Smurfs (led by Papa Smurf) team up with court jester Peewit and his friend Johan, but they will have to be vigilant: Peewit has no intentions of handing the flute over to the Smurfs when they find it.

The Smurfs and the Magic Flute is the second Smurf graphic novel published by Papercutz. The illustrations are in full-color, and the story is told in panels varying in size. Occasionally some of the text is hard to read because of its placement and color, but this story features several humorous scenes involving the Smurfs and Peewit, and a satisfying ending where everyone gets what they deserve. The settings alternate between castle scenes from the Middles Ages and the desert-like conditions of the Smurfs’ home in the Cursed Land.

Children who enjoy the cartoon or are anticipating the movie should be introduced to this story. Not only will they find out how to speak Smurf; they will also learn a little Smurf history.
