Ages 4-8 144 pages HarperCollins June 2014 Paperback

Beginning to read will be fun with these books! The animal characters in the Tug the Pup series are cute and plentiful. Their days are filled with fun activities that children will have experienced or enjoyed themselves.

After reading about Big Pig, Nat the Cat, Tug the Pup, and Pen Hen, children progress to the Level B books (The Egg, The Fireflies, The Snowflake) and end with Level C Books (Nat the Cat Gets Stuck, Buddies, The Nap, The Birthday Party). The stories get progressively harder (more words per page and longer words), but the full-page spread cartoon illustrations provide clues to the text.

Each of the books is softcover and measures five inches in height and width. The stories are a mix of animals behaving in typical (and sometimes non-typical) ways, friendship and having fun. In Big Pig (Level A), kids read “Big Pig can jump. Big Pig can ride. Big Pig can dream.” The Birthday Party (Level C) starts with “All the friends will help with the party. The party will be a surprise. Shhhh!”

Dr. Julie M. Wood shares her knowledge in education and early literacy in the twelve-page Parents’ Guide that comes with this eleven-story box set for beginning readers. There are suggestions for reading together, activities for extended learning, and forty round stickers for rewards (animals, words of encouragement, and stars).
