Ages 4-8 144 pages HarperCollins June 2014 Paperback

Children who have begun their reading journey with the first Tug the Pup and Friends box s will be happy to see some new faces in Learn to Read with Tug the Pup and Friends, Box Set 2. These books are similar to the first box set, except the short adventures include sound effects, new sight words, and a few different characters.

Book 3 focuses on rhymes (Big Pig likes to dance. FIG and JIG. Pen Hen likes to rhyme. SIT and KNIT). Many of the stories involve gardening or food (The Pie, The Corn, The Big Cucumber) or outdoor fun (The Jump Rope, The Boat, Tug the Pup is Brave, The Snowman). Teamwork is a theme in many of the eleven-page stories. The friends build together, eat together, and help one another.

Illustrator Sebastien Braun iimplements the color blue in this series (Box Set 1 was red) and repeats activities found in the first books, such as Pen Hen knitting. As a librarian, I am looking forward to putting this series on our shelves. Parents who want to help their children read will find the Parent Guide activities and stickers helpful.
