It’s summertime, and the playground is busy. Turtles are gathered in the sandbox. Three pigs are spinning around on the merry-go-round, the swings are being used by the cats, and two dogs are playing on the seesaw.

Standing in the middle of the crowd, holding onto each others’ wings, are two small chicks. This is their first time at the playground, and they are frightened to play on the equipment. When the chicks are invited to take a turn on the swings or seesaw, they exclaim, “Oh, no! Little chicks can’t do THAT!”

When the chicks are by the slide, though, they meet some animals who know how the chicks are feeling and what they need to do to overcome their fear. The story ends with a view from the bottom of the slide: the chicks have had a triumphant ride down, and they are now ready to play all day with their new friends.

The animals in this book are similar to Richard Scarry’s animal characters. They all dress and move like humans.

Children can participate in the telling of this story by repeating the phrase that occurs throughout the book and by being a part of the crowd that cheers the chicks on as they go down the slide. Although adult animals appear in the story, they stay in the background. The youngsters are the ones who support the chicks when they are at the playground.

Two Little Chicks is bigger than the average board book, but its pages retain a sturdy and glossy quality. Children who have overcome fears or are in the process of overcoming them will identify with these two main characters.
