Unlucky Charms (The Cold Cereal Saga)
by Adam Rex
Ages 8+ 400 pages Balzer + Bray February 2013 Hardcover

The second in Adam Rex's Cold Cereal Sagai>, Unlucky Charms follows the exploits and adventures of three children who must battle an evil breakfast cereal conglomerate in order to save the world. It is zany and wonderful and unbelievable (and probably happening somewhere in the world today).

Twins (though not actually) Erno and Emily, their gigantic housekeeper, Biggs, Mick the leprechaun, and Merle Lynn, the time-traveling scientist, escape from the nasty grasp of the evil Nimue. That's just the beginning. Now they must defeat the Goodco Cereal Company, which is putting Intellijuice into all their cereals and bringing back mythical and magical creatures from the vastness of yesterday by exploiting a tear in the time-space continuum.

Think Middle Earth meets Back to the Future while spending time with Alice in Wonderland. The characters are bright and energized, and the writing is smart, everything necessary to draw in younger--even older--eaders.
