Wildwood and Under Wildwood are the first and second installment of the adventure series written by Colin Meloy, the lead singer for the rock band the Decemberists. Both books are beautifully written and illustrated and venture far beyond the typical territory inhabited by middle grade stories for readers 9 years old and up.

Prue McKeel is a normal girl living a sedentary life in rainy Portland, Oregon, when her baby brother is abducted and flown away by a flock of crows. Prue and her close friend Curtis are thrust into a world of fantasy where, deep in the Impassable Wilderness, they face a world in terrible turmoil and upheaval. There are friendlies and foes, and what begins as a search for baby McKeel turns into a battle to save the very wilderness of Wildwood itself.

The Wildwood Chronicles are inventive tales carefully written, and no wonder--Meloy has penned some very cool lyrics for The Decemberists. Any age reader can pick up either of the Wildwood volumes and be transported to a world steeped in classic fantasy.
