Weight Loss Confidential: How Teens Lose Weight and Keep It Off - and What They Wish Parents Knew
by Anne M. Fletcher
272 pages Houghton Mifflin January 2007 Hardcover

Anne M. Fletcher is not only an acclaimed health and medical journalist, the author of the bestselling Thin for Life, and former contributing editor for Prevention magazine; she is also a registered dietician with a master's degree in nutrition science. With those credentials, who would be better to provide a real weight-loss guide for parents and their overweight children?

Weight Loss Confidential is a commonsense, practical book about teens managing their weight. More than that, it is practical advice for parents and how to communicate with their overweight teen.

Fletcher sticks to a journalistic style of writing. This is simple reporting, and she never judges the teens or some of the questionable methods they have used. In fact, she is quite removed from this book as over 100 teenagers talk about their weight loss in their own words.

These kids share their motivations, struggles, failures and successes candidly. Doctor recommendations are frequently provided as guidelines and to provide support to some teens while arguing other points of interest.

The book also provides reviews of many weight-loss plans, clinics, camps, programs and so forth. Fletcher does a commendable job of giving the reader options and supporting effective communication between parents and teens.

Fletcher provides so many resources that families should be able to find many viable options to promote a healthy lifestyle. Weight Loss Confidential fills a void in self-help books by getting parents and teens together, united for a common goal.

Parents need this book. Teens need their parents to read this book.
