Bear lives all alone in a cave by the sea, where he plays in the waves all day and sings to himself. One day, the sounds of a distant city ring in his ears (Vroomy, vroomy, vroom) and curiosity gets the best of him. He disembarks a train (Chuffy, chuffity, chuff) and finds himself smack dab in the center of downtown where he quickly becomes overwhelmed by the hustle and bustle, skyscrapers, traffic and street vendors. This oversized teddy tries to find solace in the park but is unsuccessful. Finally a small group of children take the lost bear by the hand and help him find his way.
Bear's Day Out , is a very simple but highly rhythmic book. Each sentence carries its own beat, and children and adults alike can’t help but “sing” along. Billed as a sequel to Michael Rosen’s award-winning We’re Going on a Bear Hunt, this story contains similar sound-word fun as the original, then kicks it up a notch.
Illustrator Adrian Reynolds’ gorgeous renditions somehow carry both an ageless and contemporary quality. From the busy cityscapes to the quiet moonlit beach, these drawings burst off the page. Mix together the outstanding work of both these accomplished artists, and you’ve got a fun-filled exciting read. But don’t keep it to yourself. It’s more fun when shared with a group. Doo bee doodily doo!
