Barbara Park’s Junie B., First Grader: Dumb Bunny is a very cute story in the usual Junie B. tradition.
Easter is fast approaching, and with it comes an invitation to the fancy house and grounds of her friend, that Lucille. Lucille’s family is throwing a big Easter picnic for all of Room 6. It promises to be fancy, complete with a golden egg prize during the egg hunt. The prize for finding the shiny egg is a day of swimming in Lucille’s private, heated swimming pool as an honored guest of the pampered princess herself.
My first-grader son would love to know just when little Miss Junie B. will stop voicing everything like an undisciplined and unintelligent toddler. That thought is echoed over and over while reading the Junie B. books, especially this one, when she is nearing the end of her first-grade career. The story is dynamite, but the lack of character growth really does hold it back. Of course, that isn’t likely to stop any of us avid fans from reading the new adventures as they arrive in stores.
In this one, as in many other treasured Junie B. books, she learns a bit of a lesson in the end, but one can bet it will be lost and forgotten by recess. Full of huffy breaths and screaming at the top of her lungs, this one promises all the same giggles as the others. The story follows the “sillier the better” rule, which will be appreciated by most kids.
