Shel Silverstein’s beautiful The Giving Tree celebrates its 50th anniversary this year. Originally published in 1964, the sparse yet moving story is a classic for readers of all ages.
It is one of those unique children’s books that speaks to the reader with plain and honest prose as it presents a touching parable about love. The illustrations—also by Silverstein—feature clear and clean white with black lines. We see the boy grow and mature, as well as how the tree shapes itself around the boy’s needs.
This anniversary edition features no frills beyond a gold sticker commemorating the 50th anniversary. It is a fitting commemoration for a story that has—and needs—no frills.
Silverstein was an accomplished author and artists, and many of his notable works are celebrating significant anniversaries this year, including the 50th anniversaries of Lafcadio, The Lion Who Shot Back, A Giraffe and a Half, Don’t Bump the Glump!, Who Wants a Cheap Rhinoceros! and the 40th anniversary of Where the Sidewalk Ends.
